Booklists and tumbleweed

x Cross Posted from Catch the Sun - Please comment there x

When I made this blog I did so with the intention to keep it updated regularly, so far I've failed epically at this but being in uni every day wasn't as easy as I thought it would be, which is odd and really bad considering I used to work near to sixty hours a week when I was travelling.
My classes are going okay though, I think my favourite so far are Screenwriting and Westerns. My Fiction class is good because I'm studying two books which I studied last year at uni so it's not all new information and History is fairly easy as it's a class with 300 or so people in it so I can be happily inconspicious the entire time - the only down side is that it's all based on exams and I've learnt that I'm not that great when it comes to exams...or essays...or studying in general but because the marking system is different in the US I'm trying not to slack off like I did last year.

So far though this is my reading list for one semester:
- Louisiana: A History
- Twelve years as a slave
- Earl of Louisiana
- No Country for Old Men
- Screenwriters Guide (by Syd Field)
- Wild Sargasso Sea
- On the Road
- Their Eyes Were Watching God
- Lolita
- American Short Stories by Bert Hitchcock
- The Virgininan
- Banditti of the Plains
- Deadwood Dick

I had made a rule that I wouldn't buy as many books as I did when I was in Australia as it just adds unnecessary weight to suitcases but I've already succeeded. What's worse is that I had to buy two copies of Banditti of the Plains and Louisiana: A History after I left them in my Fiction class and now have no idea where they are!

I did do my first set of quizzes though in my Fiction and Westerns class, for the Westerns class I got 88% which is a B/B+ depending on which grading scale you use which I was happy about seeing as I'm normally a C average student. So maybe (on a wing and a prayer) I can not fail at the US education system!

RIP

Rest In Peace Farrah Fawcett

and of course Michael Jackson

I had never really been a big fan of either growing up and had only started listening to Michael's music in the past month, ironically I was listening to Billie Jean before I went to sleep and before I had heard of the news this morning. I went to get a newspaper and sadly only one was dedicated to Farrah Fawcett but with Jackson being a bigger star it was inevitable. Either way it's a sad loss.
<strike>I'm wanting to include clips from the Bones pilot in my documentary but can't find it for download anywhere, I've searched Mininova, ISOHunt, Piratebay and Bittorrent but no joy. If anyone knows of any other places I could try, or has the download that they could upload for me I'd be so greatful!
</strike>

Thanks englishstrawbie

<strike>
</strike>

Louisiana here I come!!!

Friday the 13th might be unlucky for some but for me Friday March 13th 2009 is the day that I've found out I'm moving to America.
I got my ISEP results through this morning and have been placed at Louisiana State University which was my third choice behind Chapman University and Pitzer College (both in California). Because I've been accepted onto the programme this now means I can apply for academic training once I complete my second year allowing me to stay in the USA for two years, but the minute I'm told I can work you can bet anything that I'll be looking for sponsorship to stay out there permanently.

Either way though, long live Friday 13th!!

Need some help

I'm beginning to start production on my short film soon but am needing a voice over for a poem I've written. I'm looking for a foreign accent as it will be kind of representative in the film (can explain more to the person who volunteers to help - if there are any!). The poem's only 9 lines long and if anyone can give a hand I would really appreciate it.
You would be credited in the film and get to use what you've recorded for something else if needed and of course can showcase the film if you want others to see it.

Anyways, here's the poem, and if anyone does want to do it please let me know ^_^

Here I Stand

Here I stand,
Amongst the world of chaos
Amongst the greates battle
Within the whirlwind we face
An unsettled time and place

The world acts too quick
As if life never settles
Amongst the world of chaos
Here I stand.

Australia has my heart

Last weekend I watched Chaley Boorman's (sp?) show 'By Any Means' where he tries to get from Ireland to Sydney by any form of transport execpt commerical airlines. Last Saturday was the final show where they arrived in Australia and as they did the lead up to Sydney I was already feeling emotional but the minute they showed Harbour Bridge and the Opera House I was in tears! I think it was mainly because it's the first time I've seen it since coming home, it was the last landmark I saw in Sydney and to me it represents freedom amongst other emotions and of course is the icon of Australia.

Recently though it's stirred new emotions as I've received some bad news from Down Under which I'm going to try and deal with before posting about what's happened.
At the end of the day though Australia has become part of me and will always have a special place in my heart. Something I never expected when I first decided to go

Writer's Block: Deaf Awareness

In conjunction with Deaf Awareness Month, discuss some famous deaf people who have helped to make history. If you're hearing impaired yourself, give us a sense of what your experience is like, so we can better appreciate it.

View 347 Answers

For me I find I have to strain sometimes to hear what's being said. It's like the volume's turned down slightly and there's no remote control to make it better. I also struggle to hear people when they talk quietly or if a lot of conversations are happening at once and I can pick out what someone is saying to me.
I have only recently been given my hearing aid and am struggling to get used to. Truth be told I haven't worn it this week but think I should next week when lectures start.

I only have the problem in the left side of my ear due to operations I've had. Being hearing impaired doesn't change who I am or make me different it just means that I've got to wear my hearing device on the outside of my ear rather than on the inside.
